As a new marketplace looks to make a splash in the industry, it can be tough to attract new employees and users. With questions arising whether it is a good place to work for, or how can I trust them if they are so new? Many like to look for more established marketplaces such as Amazon. They have created a culture in which they are able to attract top-tier talent. So where should a marketplace owner start? Let’s take a look at 4 steps to get your marketplace headed in the right direction.

1. Strike The Right Balance.

Live by the motto, “Work hard, play hard.” This has become the way of startups and the trend of new businesses. Instead of working employees on a typical 9-5 shift, let employees become more flexible with their schedules coming in at different times of the day to help accommodate what they have outside of work. Some may have to drop their kids off in the morning while others like to get a morning workout in. Nothing is wrong with letting your employees create a schedule that fits and helps put them in a better mood.

Also keep in mind vacation time, as people do need time away from the job. This can help put employees clear their minds and bring a fresh mindset back. Encourage employees to take advantage of vacation time at least once a year. In a recent article regarding productivity, “Going on a vacation and immersing yourself in new surroundings and cultures can open your mind and forever change the way you view the world.” This is especially true when visiting other countries or cities that may not be as fortunate as your current situation. We often take things for granted when we are just going through the motions, so a little vacation can be the boost employees need.

One of the biggest factors when people are looking for a job. How do I fit in the with the culture and do I see myself working comfortably with others? Money isn’t the only deciding factor when people are looking for work. While it does play a big part to coming, happiness is what determines whether they will be staying for long. Creating a culture in which people get along, enjoy working with one another, and place where they can be themselves should be your ultimate goal. People spend an average of 200 hours a week at work, so why not make it enjoyable for them?

When I started my job search after college a few years ago, I was concerned about finding a place that not only helped my professional development but also as a person as well. This is especially important for the younger generations as they are just getting their feet wet in the real world. Attract others to your marketplace with your culture and opportunity to make a difference in the company. You’ll be surprised the amount of people you will be hearing from.

3. Network On Social Media.

Social media is a great place to showcase what your marketplace is up to. Whether you are looking to attract employees, contractors, or even new customers. Getting on social media can help widen the scope and build a buzz. Often times, startups like to share what’s going on behind the scenes and give the inside look. Showcasing how great of a product or service they are creating and how fun it is to work there can attract a whole crowd of people.

Update and share photos on your social media accounts on a regular basis. Upload something from your weekly team meetings, friday lunches, or events that happen outside of work. Creating a sense of togetherness and showing others on social media will help generate your following while also raising brand awareness. We all have to start somewhere and social media can act as the boost you need to attract new talent.

4. Show Your Obsession.

This one can be what sets your marketplace apart from the competition. A company that gives their full efforts to becoming the best in the industry is what it is all about. People will not want to work for a marketplace that gives half the effort or has terrible management. Top-tier talent is always looking to improve on what they already know and if you can’t provide that, they will simply move onto the next. Constantly test your market with your research and development to look for new ways to improve. The market is always changing and your marketplace should be too.

Showcase your obsession with being the best by putting your employees first and letting them have a say in things. Don’t become management that just shuts down everyone’s ideas and only chooses to hear a select few. Be obsessed with creating the best team and training them the best you can as well. This will help line your marketplace up for success and become a leader in the space. Like Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, and a civilization work.”
