It’s hard to imagine giant tech companies like Google and Facebook in the early stages of their success… unless you’ve seen a well-known movie made about them. But the scale these titans are working at is bound to a few key values unique to each company. Core values are a set of 5-7 traits that describe the company culture. Core values are usually short and succinct but hold weight on each employee. Hectic workflow can easily let things slip through the cracks but no matter what events occur there should always be the foundation of core values to keep a business grounded.
The companies we’re about to discuss have developed core values that go beyond integrity and hard work ethic because those are given. These values are purposeful and deliberate, you’ll notice that each company utilizes these phrased to stay on track of their goals.

AirBnB is a younger company with a free-spirited culture as you will see in its core values. Overall being a positive and easy-going person paired with a MacGyver imagination makes you good in their book.
- Champion the Mission — Believing in the service AirBnB offers and wanting to be a part of it plays a big part in if you will fit into the company’s culture.
- Be a Host — Hospitality is key! A marketplace that runs like a hotel should have employees that display similar qualities of a welcoming host.
- Every Frame Matters — Visualizing your end product will help you develop a better result. Like Walt Disney’s storyboarding, AirBnB does the same to keep things on track.
- Be a “Cereal Entrepreneur” — If you haven’t heard the story before, I’ll give you a brief backstory. The baby stages of AirBnB were supported by selling cereal boxes of presidential candidates, the campaign was a hit and now we have AirBnB. Moral of the story is that AirBnB values creativity and a work-with-what-you-got attitude.
- Embrace the Adventure — Like the guests that stay in exotic locations, employees should have a healthy sense of adventure. Being approachable and easy to work with is a must.
Focused more on being ahead of its peers, Facebook is the shark of social media. Being good and doing good is how this platform strives to run and you don’t see Facebook slowing down anytime soon.
- Focus On Impact — All projects and goals should point directly to making an impact. It’s easy to get distracted by other goals like sales or partnerships but Facebook knows exactly what they’re after.
- Move Fast — “Move fast and break things” is their saying. If something “breaks” you’re moving fast enough. The Menlo Park company doesn’t mind making mistakes if it’s on the way to innovation.
- Be Bold — Nothing is ever done while you’re comfortable! Thinking outside the box can lead to great things. We’ve seen this time and time again on Facebook.
- Be Open — Listen to your critics and praises. Learning from any department is encouraged to build a network of knowledge
- Build Social Value — The goal of social media is to connect people. Facebook has done that with each upgrade making it easier to share special moments in every user’s life.
If you need anything, you can probably find it on Amazon. One thing that has brought them to their level of success (and borderline monopoly) is their list of guiding principles. If Amazon were a person, she’d be the woman who doesn’t take crap from anyone at anytime. For the sake of this list, I’ll keep the descriptions short.

- Insist on the Highest Standards — Perfection is impossible but they can try.
- Think Big — Be bold and inspire.
- Bias for Action — Taking risks, mistakes are OK.
- Frugality — Constraints breed resourcefulness and invention.
- Earn Trust — Have confidence in your team’s and your work.
- Dive Deep — Being a little skeptical is good, find holes and fix them.
- Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit — Be able to stand up for what you believe in.
- Deliver Results — A can-do attitude.
One of the most recognizable symbols in the world is the little Macintosh apple. Known for their innovative products and minimal campaigns, Apple really doesn’t need an introduction. The company’s values are simple and lean, they know what they do and what they don’t do which is just as important when you’re such a giant figure. Let’s take a bite and see what’s at the core of this corporation.

- Believe in simple, not the complex.
- Need to own and control primary technologies behind the products.
- Participate in markets where they can make significant contributions.
- Say no to thousands of projects so they can focus on the few that are truly important to them.
- Deep collaboration and cross-pollination that allow them to innovate.
- Don’t settle for less than excellence in every group.
These four companies play in different fields but as you may have noticed, there are some similarities. Making an impact, defining the scope, and taking risks are all in these examples. As simple as these values seem, they take time to develop and require a deep understanding of the goals and intent. These are great examples of core values that have gotten these companies where they are now. Be inspired but your business is unique.
